The Cults

Cults is an indie-pop band from Manhattan, New York. The band first drew to prominence when they posted a five song EP, Cults 7″, on their Bandcamp page.

The album has a innocent and balmy feel that brings to mind Swedish indie pop, with a tinkling glockenspiel cutting through humidity, an appealingly lazy bassline, and joyous sing-along vocals.

INSPIRATION: Francis Bacon

“If I was asked what/who I was inspired by, I would answer…..Other than the everyday things I see, landscape, pattern or person…I am truly inspired by three artists. One being M.C Escher, Second being Max Ernst and the other being…….”

Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon (28 October 1909 – 28 April 1992), was an Anglo-Irish figurative painter known for his bold, austere, graphic and emotionally raw imagery.Bacon’s painterly but abstract figures typically appear isolated in glass or steel geometrical cages set against flat, nondescript backgrounds. He began painting during his early 20s and worked only sporadically until his mid 30s. Before this time he drifted, earning his living as an interior decorator and designer of furniture and rugs. Later, he admitted that his career was delayed because he had spent too long looking for a subject that would sustain his interest. His breakthrough came with the 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, and it was this work and his heads and figures of the late 1940s through to the mid 1950s that sealed his reputation as a notably bleak chronicler of the human condition.

Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick

Collaborative duo Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick‘s Mars: Adrift on the Hourglass Sea exhibition opens on Saturday, May 21st at Kopeikin Gallery. Kahn & Selesnick work lies at the intersection of historical fact, apocalyptic future and nerdy museology. Melding childlike playfulness with adult obsession, they create faux-historical narratives realized as photography, sculpture, and installation. “Adrift on the Hourglass Sea” is set on the planet Mars where the artists present a dark and powerful visage of a collapsed civilization on the red planet. Using photo-mosaics of the Martian landscape taken by NASA space rovers (they were recipients of a NASA commission to create work about Mars) and combining them with their own photographs of deserts in Nevada and Utah, the artists present their distinctive brand of sci-fi mysticism.
